The Georgia Stokes

A number of Stokeses in the South had slaves. Even those who had been indentured (white slaves), when they achieved freedom from servitude, took slaves. When freedom came to the Black slave, many of them took for themselves a surname, and many of them chose the name of the slave owner; therefore, we have the Georgia Stokeses.
